AFTER many delays, the much-awaited R&B party featuring the country’s biggest names in the music genre will definitely be held this month.The concert has been set on September 27 at the University of Mindanao (UM) gym in Matina, Davao City. In the bill are Myxtreme, Jay-R, Kris Lawrence, Thor and South Border’s Jay Durias. Myxtreme, Thor and Jay are Davao’s homegrown talents who are now among the biggest players in Manila.The September to Remember concert will also be the album launch of Myxtreme, the biggest winner in last year’s Muzika del Sur’s Music Awards with two major honors.

The R&B concert was initially set last July. But due to some unavoidable circumstances, including the arranging of the performers’ schedules and paper works, the organizers moved the concert to September.The tickets will be out by next week, Myxtreme vocalist Sherwin Acac texted Times.

As Davaoeño, Sherwin said they have long been wishing to have their album launch in Davao as a tribute to the region where they started.
The band was formed as FreshMix in Davao before moving to Manila where they become the back-up band of Jay-R, the country’s R&B Prince.
The band underwent various membership changes. Then vocalist Thor (born Ethoree Dulay from Panabo City in Davao del Norte) left the group for a solo career. Since then, he has successfully released two albums, and a collaboration with a London-based group. Thor has produced the hits Wonderland and Be My Number Two (with fellow Davao talent Juris Fernandez of M.Y.M.P.).

Sherwin said he is happy that fellow Davaoeño artists Thor and Jay are very supportive in this ambitious project for their kababayang Davaoeños.
“I hope our Davaoenos will support us,” Sherwin said.
Aside from Sherwin on vocals and guitars, Myxtreme is composed of Jopee Hipolito on drums, Jovel Camahalan on keyboard, John Fritz Morales on bass, Jason Chua on lead guitar and Mark Michael Tan Garcia on vocals.

The band’s debut album will have 14 songs – 10 originals and four covers of their fave songs.The album includes Windblow, the group entry in MDS Awards in 2007 that won them Best Video and the People Choice’s Award. That song became a regional hit in Davao last year, topping a number of radio stations. Even Gary Valenciano expressed interest in recording the song. The carrier single in the new album is the revival, No Arms Can Ever Hold You, by English glam rocker Chris Norman.

South Border is a Filipino Pop and R&B band formed in the 90s who gained recognition in the music scene in the 2000s.

Having undergone several permutations in its long career, South Border has nevertheless retained its unique sound and musical sensibility and has even moved up along the current global trends in music. Hence, retaining the top spot in their particular musical genre. Much credit goes to musical director and lead creative genius Jay Durias, the staunchest unifying force that has kept the band and its music alive and thriving.

The band, whose name is a tribute to their roots in DAVAO, first came into national prominence in 1996 when they launched their first self-titled album. It included a Jimmy Antiporda song entitled “May Pag-Ibig Pa Kaya’ which they interpreted in the Metro Manila Pop Music Festival earlier that year. Another song, “Kahit Kailan” was awarded 1996 Song of the Year by various radio stations, thus giving them their first big hit.

The following year, the album reached gold, then platinum. South Border was all set for their first major concert at the Araneta Coliseum. As expected, thousands of their new found fans trooped to fill the massive dome to the brim. Before the end of 1997, the exceptional talents of South Border was recognized by their peers in the industry when they bagged the most number of trophies at the 10th AwitAwards including Best Performance by a New Duo or Group, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Produced Record of the Year for their hit song, “Kahit Kailan”. By the end of 1997, their debut album has gone triple platinum and South Border was a certified star band.

Not long after that, in the midst of a flourishing career, South Border found itself in the eye of a storm which called for a conspicuous change in their lineup. Luke Mejares replaced Brix Ferraris on lead vocals. But despite discouraging forecasts, South Border got back on their feet in no time. In a rush of creative adrenaline, the band doubled their efforts to finish their second album called Bump! It featured “Sa ‘Yo” a haunting ballad that spoke of a heart’s yearning for a loved one and “Reborn,” South Border’s first attempt at recording an instrumental piece reminiscent of their early jazz influences. In 1999, South Border once again caught the critical eye and bagged a total of 12 Katha Music awards including Record of the Year, Best Pop Song, and Best R&B Song—all for “Sa ‘Yo”. The following year, the band released its first live recording which was well-received by their fans and drew rave reviews from critics. At the turn of the new millennium, the band once again made waves with the success of “Habang Atin ang Gabi” the theme song from La Vida Rosa a Rossana Roces-Diether Ocampo film. The lyrics were written by scriptwriter Armando Lao and the music was composed by Jay Durias, who considers this song to be one of his best compositions and arrangements to date.

The same song became the carrier single for their fourth album, The Way We Do released in 2001. In November of the same year, South Border staged their biggest major show at the 30,000-seater PSC Track and Field Oval. But in the final quarter of 2002, another surprise jolted South Border’s avid followers: the announcement that Luke was leaving the band to go solo. The search for his replacement was going to be another grueling task.

Having gone through another major change in their lead vocals lineup, the band scored a major win when they got not one but two astonishing vocal talents in Vince Alaras and Duncan Ramos. 26-year old Vince, was a member of La Salle’s Kundirana and was then known as “the boy who sounded like Brian McKnight". The younger Duncan on the other hand was a child prodigy — a singing and dancing wonder boy who often accompanied Gary Valenciano in his shows and tours allover the country.

The two new talents who danced as well as they sang, provided a fresh and youthful take on South Border which has since then came up with the current hits we all hear on the radio and even on television today. The biggest of which is perhaps “Rainbow” which first hit the airwaves in 2003 for the promotion of megastar Sharon Cuneta’s Metro Manila Film Festival entry, Crying Ladies. South Border’s music even dominated television with their song “Ikaw Nga” —the love theme from the phenomenal hit TV series Mulawin. In 2004, the band released their first album under their own independent label. Episode III was a gigantic commercial success that included hits “The Show” and “Brown Hand Smash” — two songs that gave the group an edgier, danceable R&B sound.

On August 2007, the band officially announced the departure of its two vocalist, Duncan Ramos and Vince Alaras. The band reportedly claimed that the two want to pursue solo careers in the future.

Rapper Eminem has been hospitalized due to a serious heart condition. He is also said be battling pneumonia.

The Detroit rapper was rushed to the hospital over the holiday's.

Eminem's publicist told TMZ

"Over the holidays, Marshall Mathers, aka Eminem, was under doctor's care at a Detroit-area hospital for complications due to pneumonia. He has since been released and is doing well recovering at home."

He is said to have exceeded over 200 pounds in weight.

To put perspective on the weight, Em is only 5'8".

7 Tips to Improve Your Singing Voice

Are you more of a William Hung than a Kelly Clarkson? Or are you a decent singer—and wish you were a little better? Whatever your vocal skill, these tips for improving your singing voice are sure to get you singing and sounding much better.

Tip 1: Think about breath. Without proper breathing, you aren’t using your voice to its full potential. To find out if you’re breathing correctly for singing, place your hand on your stomach and inhale. Your hand should move out—your stomach should be expanding, not your ribcage and chest. That’s because you need to support your breath with your diaphragm—the muscle underneath the lungs that inflates them. The diaphragm is activated by abdominal muscles, and it’s much stronger than the muscles between your ribs—the muscles you’re using if your chest, not your stomach, expands with your breath.

You’ll need to have strong breath to give your voice adequate support for singing. To do this, you’ll need to use your stomach and lower abdominal muscles to support your breath. Ab crunches and sit-ups can help you build up strength in this area that you can use to project your voice.

Tip 2: Focus on posture. Your breath travels from your lungs straight up through your mouth. If its passage is twisted, kinked, or blocked in any way, it won’t be able to get out efficiently. How you stand has a big effect on how you sound. You should be standing with your legs about shoulder-width apart. Your chest should be lifted to give your lungs plenty of room to expand. Your shoulders should be back and relaxed.

Tip 3: Relax. If there’s tension anywhere from your abdomen to your head, it’ll affect your sound. Your facial muscles, tongue and throat muscles, vocal cords, jaw and shoulders should all be as relaxed as possible. There are plenty of jaw and facial exercises as well as warm-up activities that will help you relax the muscles in your shoulders, face, and vocal cords.

Tip 4: Know where to put your tongue and soft palate. The soft palate should be raised—this will give more space for your voice to resonate. The tip of your tongue should be placed at the back of your teeth. This will keep it from blocking your throat if it’s positioned too far back.

Tip 5: Watch what you eat. There’s nothing better for your voice than water. Period. If you have a performance coming up, avoid dairy and thick drinks for at least three days beforehand. Drink only water the day of the performance.

Tip 6: Don’t strain. Pay attention to your body. If something hurts when you sing, you’re either at the limit of your range or you’re doing something wrong. You should be able to sing at a strong, healthy volume if you’re maintaining proper breath control; if something hurts because you’re singing too loudly, you’re probably not supporting your voice well with your breath—the vocal cords are doing all the work. If you hurt when trying to hit certain high or low notes, however, it may be that you’re trying for a note that’s outside of your range. It’s true that good breath control can expand your range, but the size of your vocal cords determines the pitches you can reach. You may not be able to hit certain notes no matter how well you support your voice. It’s important to choose songs you can sing comfortably. Above all, don’t try to sing if you have a sore throat—you may make it worse.

Tip 7: Warm up before singing. Don’t go straight into a song without a good warm-up first. A good warm-up routine should concentrate on relaxing your body and getting your breath ready, and should start with simple deep breaths. It should progress to light humming from there, and then some scale work once you feel ready. It’s important not to strain too hard during the warm-up process—don’t reach for notes that aren’t comfortable, and don’t sing at the top of your volume.

Tip 8: Get a teacher. A good voice teacher can really help you improve your voice. It’s sometimes hard to determine how you sound when you’re by yourself; even the most dedicated singer can get into bad habits without feedback. A teacher can give you immediate feedback on how you’re doing and address specific problems you may have.

It’s a shame that so many people think they can’t sing—and wouldn’t be caught dead singing in public. In truth, singing is something anyone can learn to do. Follow these tips and practice, and you’ll have a singing voice you’ll be proud to show off.

After many denials about being pregnant by both Jennifer Lopez and her hubby Marc Anthony, photos were released of her apparent baby bump when her "maternity" top flew up and revealed her growing figure at their concert on Wednesday night. A witness who attended the show reported:

“A fan blew the side of her top all the way up for a moment, and a definitive baby bump was there. She was very quick to push down her top. Then she talked about how this year is full of firsts for her … and every so often her dress would fly up and you would see her belly.”

The New York Post has a source claiming the couple are planning to confirm their wonderful news at their homecoming show in NYC this weekend. The source said:

“[they will] announce that she and Marc Anthony are expecting their first child on Saturday night at her Madison Square Garden concert.”

How exciting for her. I really hope the rumor about them pregnant with twins is true. I'd like to see if she beats out Salma Hayek for biggest celebrity baby bump.

Jericho Rosales Stages Major Concert This October To Celebrate 10th year in Showbiz

Ipinagdiriwang ni Jericho Rosales ang ika-sampung taon niya sa showbiz. Bilang pasasalamat sa mga biyayang kanyang natanggap, magkakaroon ang aktor ng two-night concert titled Raw Energy na gaganapin sa October 18 and 19, 8 p.m., sa Music Museum. Ito ang unang attempt ni Echo na mag-concert and he has no less than Mr. Pure Energy, Mr. Gary Valenciano, as co-director.

Ano ang naala-ala ni Jericho kapag binabanggit ang 10 years na lumipas?

"Naging mabilis ang pagtakbo ng mga bagay-bagay. Maraming tapings ang naubos. Madalas akong puyat sa mga maraming TV guestings. One day, pumunta ako sa taping, tinanong ko ang mga cameramen, mas bata na sila kaysa akin," pahayag ni Echo sa PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) sa presscon ng Raw Energy na ginanap sa 9501 restaurant ng ABS-CBN kaninang tanghali, September 25.

ECHO AS A MUSICIAN. Pero pagdating sa music, parang bumagal daw ang oras para kay Echo. Parang bumagal daw siyang mag-age sa music scene. In fairness, baguhan pa lang si Echo sa music scene. Last year lang talaga siya nagseryoso sa kanyang music matapos niyang mabuo ang kanyang Jeans Band at naglunsad sila ng kanilang debut album.

"Kasi sa music, pag nag-jam kayo ng one song, parang in three minutes marami na rin ang nangyari. Unlike sa taping na you work 24 hours," dugtong ni Echo.

Sabi pa niya, "Singing gives me a different kind of high, pero it depends sa energy. Sa acting, may mga scenes na you give a certain kind of energy pero sa singing, parang it's something to die for. Sa Pangarap na Bituin, iba ang high. Kumakanta ako, naggigitara, at umaarte at the same time. Dramatic ang effect."

Iba raw ang preparasyon ni Echo pag umaarte siya in front of the camera kumpara kung nakatuntong siya sa concert stage at umaawit. Bagama't may mga areas raw na hawig ang acting at singing, in terms of energy na ibinigay sa performance, sabi ni Echo ay he also puts his heart into music. Pag nagpe-perform siya, hyper na hyper din siya sa stage.

Does singing make him a better actor? "Yeah. Being an actor also makes me a better musician. I can feel the song tapos most of the songs I sing, mga original compositions ko pa, kaya damang-dama ko talaga. Pinipili ko talaga ang mga songs na kinakanta ko," wika ng award-winning actor.

MAJOR CONCERT. Baguhan pa lang siya sa music scene, plus mas kilala siya bilang mahusay na actor, bakit pinili ni Echo na magkaroon ng first major concert to celebrate his tenth year in the business?

"It was Tita Angeli's [Valenciano, his manager] idea na mag-concert ako. She says I can do it na. I stopped acting for one year para bigyan ang sarili ko to develop my singing career. May mga gigs kami. Nood lang siya nang nood sa amin. Hindi muna niya ipinagsabi. Tiningnan muna niya ang reaction sa amin ng mga tao. Mga three years na ako into singing, pero one year pa lang ako into performing in gigs with my band. Nagsusulat na rin ako ng mga songs ko," kuwento ni Echo.

Tampok sa Raw Energy ang unang matagumpay na dekada ni Echo sa showbiz, mula sa pagiging aktor hanggang isang certified musical artist. Ang concert na ito ay joint effort ng Silver Moon Productions na pag-aari ni Echo, at GV Productions, Inc. (GVPI). Magkasamang magdidirek ng concert sina Gary at Echo.

"Para sa akin, maganda mag-celebrate na nakikita ko ang mga tao. Saka lagi rin lang ako naikukumpara kay Sir Gary at kay Bamboo. Ang masasabi ko lang, may iisang groove ang bawat artist na unique sa kanya. Ikumpara ka man sa iba, lalabas at lalabas ang natural mong talent.

"Kaya tinawag na raw energy, kasi I have raw talent na hindi naman natin masasabi na pangit pero hindi pa naman ito polished. I want the people to see the raw energy that I have. Sabi ni Tita Angeli, huwag raw akong mahihiyang ipakita ang raw energy that I have. Baka makita mo akong sumasayaw sa stage pero hindi iyon choreographed number. Kung sa acting, parang it's like any fine actor who plays James Bond, then you ask somebody like Brad Pitt to be James Bond. Magkaibang-magkaiba ang style."

Life goes on for R&B band South Border

"Everything does happen for a reason—this is what we always say—and with this, we announce the departure of Duncan Ramos and Vince Alaras (front) as South Border's frontliners," read a written statement issued by local R&B group, South Border on the departure of its two vocalists.

Seems like in the music scene, ‘tis the year of breakups and moving forward. Just a few months ago, Rivermaya announced the departure of its main man Rico Blanco.

Local R&B band, South Border, is no stranger to the parting of ways.

In a collective statement last Saturday, August 18, in Startalk, the band formally announced the departure of vocalists, Duncan Ramos and Vince Alaras after years of producing great original music.

"Everything does happen for a reason—this is what we always say—and with this, we announce the departure of Duncan Ramos and Vince Alaras as South Border's front liners," read the written statement.

The remaining members quickly squashed brewing speculations that the separation is clouded with bitterness and animosity.

"Contrary to what critics and rumor-mongering individuals would want to expect, the separation was certainly not an ugly one. People grow and learn a lot of new things and at this point, Duncan and Vince have decided to move on and pursue their careers to greater lengths," explained the band. They hope to continue playing basketball and to hang out with Duncan Ramos and Vince Alaras.

Duncan and Vince also issued their good-bye statement, thanking their band mates and fans for all the wonderful experiences they all shared in the past.

"It gave us the chance to hone ourselves and become better musicians. However, we have arrived at a crossroad where we feel our creative ideas should now take a different route," they stated.

This is the third time that South Border bids goodbye to its front liner, or this time, front liners. Before Duncan and Vince, frontliners Brix Feraris and Luke Mijares left the group on different occasions. Both vocalists pursued a solo career, albeit receiving a lukewarm reception.

Incidentally, South Border is celebrating its 14th anniversary this year.

"We are thankful that we have reached this milestone in our lives. We wish to extend our utmost gratitude to those who have been by our side from the day we released our very first album in 1996," the statement further said.

South Border is currently busy recording a new studio album slated tentatively late this year or early next year. With Duncan and Vince as vocals, they produced hits like "Rainbow," "Ikaw Nga," and "The Show."

Myxtreme's Hometown Celebrates Kadayawan Festival 2007

A warm and friendly greeting derived from the Dabawenyo word "dayaw" that means good, valuable, superior or beautiful. Such is "Kadayawan," a celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the bounties of harvest and serenity of living.

Today, Kadayawan has metamorphosed into a festival of festivals, the mother of many other fesivals in the region as it honors Davao's heritage, its past personified by the ancestral "lumads", its people as they celebrate on the streets, and its floral industry as they parade in full regalia in thanksgiving for the blessings bestowed on the city.

The festival began from a government-initiated program called “Unlad Proyekto Davao” in 1986, planned to unite the Davaoeños after the chaotic martial law years and to showcase the city as a peaceful and colorful place to visit and do business in. At the time, it was called “Apo Duwaling,”a name created from the icons Davao was famous for: Mt. Apo, the country's highest peak; durian, the king of fruits; and waling-waling. The queen of orchids. Davao is also home of the majestic Philippine eagle, the national bird. In 1988, the festival was renamed “Kadayawan sa Dabaw” by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to celebrate the city's unique wealth in flowers, fruits, and ethnic culture.

Today, Kadayawan has transformed into a festival of festivals, the mother of may other festivals in the region as it honors Davao’s artistic, cultural and historical heritage, its past personified by the ancestral “lumads”, its people as they celebrate on the streets, and its floral industry as they parade in full regalia in thanksgiving for the blessings granted on the city.

“Kadayawan sa Dabaw” is an enriching experience with a difference as its explores the past, present and future of the Davaoeños, the Mindanaoans, the Filipinos. Its sights and sounds remain supreme. Be part of the experience.

My deepest and sincerest apologies
I regretfully inform the band Tabularaza and its supporters that there has been a misinformation about the letter code supposedly assigned to them, when such was initially released to the public. Officially, Tabularaza’s letter code for the text votes should be “E” as it is what was assigned in the SMS system designed for our active polls for the upcoming Muzika del sur Music Awards 2007. However, due to my lack of attention to details, I recklessly forgot to change the letter on the template I sent to Tabularaza, the same template I used for the other bands under the Best Music Video category. Instead of E, I sent to Tabularaza the incorrect text code which was mixmdsmusicvideo D - the same information I gave Myxtreme, the band that was originally appropriated with the code. Upon realizing my mistake, I immedietely sent a follow-up text to Tabularaza informing them that the code assigned to them is E not D, but apparentely and most unfortunately, their representative received no such text and went ahead disseminating the incorrect information I have provided.
It came to a point that the situation unfolded, and it did not make sense to Tabularaza’s numerous supporters, that the poll results did not reflect the approximated votes that came in. Inasmuch, as it can be easily assumed that the vast majority of votes that were intended for Tabularaza went to Myxtreme, as of now, we have no power to say which vote belonged to who when they have all been collected under one letter. When Tabularaza approached our party regarding this, it was finally revealed after the influx of votes already came in, what the cause of the confusion was. Rest assured that at this point, Tabularaza knows the whole truth about their situation and what necessary corrections were to be informed to the public - to which the rest followed.
I therefore state, in behalf of myself, that the public needs to know the following: 1.) That the official letter code of Tabularaza is E not D; 2.) That after consulting and corresponding with the bands involved in this situation, the decision was made to reset the polls in order to have a more accurate reflection of votes from this point on, since the misinformations have been cleared up; 3.) That the other bands under the said category whose votes were not mixed up have the votes that came in for them taken in to account; 4.) That all means are exhausted in order to appropriate the votes to the respective bands before August 19, 2007 - the night of the awards; 5.) That in the event the service provider can help sort out the votes, I will personally see to it that they are taken in to account 6.) That there is no conspiracy, malicious intent or any sort of cheating done against any band involved in the active polls because of the fact that I can personally vouch for my error and have no active affiliation with either of the bands involved in this situation ; 7.) That my company have had no hand in my individual mistake; and 8.) That I am deeply and utterly sorry for this mistake, and that I am doing the best I can to correct it.
From the bottom of my heart, I hope that all things have been cleared up and that none of the parties will do anything to aggravate or disrespect each other. If there is any damage done, let it stop at where I went wrong.
Again, my deepest apologies and regrets.

Muzika del Sur, the country’s first and only cable Television magazine show that tackles the music scene of Mindanao who are the organizers of the said event is enjoining the public to vote for their favorite Mindanao artists.

Her father is a legend in Spain for his music with Los Brincos, the Beatles of Spain, and was also a hit in the Philippines during the 70s as a singer, one of his hits was "Yakap", a popular song in the Philippines, and did films with Vilma Santos, and her mother is the Spanish singer Rocio Durcal, who died this year of cancer.

We’ve all got our life’s story to tell. We’ve had hardships and sadness, good times and bad times, sorrows and struggles. We’ve all had those weeks wherein we literally had nothing to eat, and barely anything to sleep on. We’ve been burnt, we’ve been scarred, we’ve all been beaten down one way or another, but none have had the extremes quite like that of one of the most promising bands in the country today, MYXTREME.

Myxtreme is an RnB band made up of all Davao bred and born talents: Sherwin C. Acac on vocals and acoustic guitar, Mark Michael Tan Garcia rocks the mic, Jeoffy Hipolito drums the beat, Jovel Camahalan tickles the ebonies and ivories, Jason Chua leads the guitar and Mr. John Fritz Morales keeps up with the bass. No other extraordinary group of people have come together to form such an extreme band that has quite literally seen it all.

Starting their careers as the official backup for pop and rnb king JAYR, they have evolved into an independent band with Mark acting as their very own JayR-like front. They have wooed audiences in prominent bars all across Manila. They rocked it on the sets of Channel 3. They brought the house down on S.O.P. They stole the hearts of many young women not only with their promising good looks, but also with the extraordinary aptitude they have in their profession. Truly Myxtreme has a lot to boast, but it hasn’t always been that way for the group.

They left the small town of Davao hoping to make it BIG in the Capital Region. But it certainly wasn’t an overnight success story. They have had to struggle with hardships and discrimination, often turning to friends for help and support. These were hard times, times wherein food and currency were most especially in shortage. The group strained hours of performing onstage, stomachs filled with nothing but scarcely rationed instant noodles or eggs. Sometimes things got so bad, they literally had nothing to eat but flour and cubes deep fried in cooking oil. But despite all of this, the band kept their decorum, making them seem as if they’ve been fine dining and cruise living all their lives. That is what sets Myxtreme apart and makes them worthy of praise; hardworking, honest individuals who play not because it’s their job, but because it’s their passion.

As exhibited by their first music video “WINDBLOW”, it takes a lot of passion to succeed in the industry. The video, shot and produced in and by Dabawenyos, talks about a band waiting to make it in the big scene. A quick synopsis of the three different lessons shown in the video is that; One, sometimes we must make sacrifices like leaving our loved ones in search for better opportunities; Two, a love story that has a happy ending; and Three, another love story that ends in tragedy. The video, along with the album, is soon to be launched in the coming months. So watch out for it! 

In their rise to fame, specially with the band’s fast approaching album debut, they could only hope to garner recognition and support from fellow Dabawenyos, for indeed they themselves are Davao’s pride. They hope that with their album’s launch, people back home would learn to appreciate and take pride in homegrown talents. It is their dream that with adequate support and acknowledgment, bands from local entertainment scenes wouldn’t have to travel to the big city to gain recognition.

“What’s that rubbish you’re playing?” many a parent has asked the younger generation of the time. Well, what is discordant music to one person may not be to another.

Many a classical composer has been ahead of his time, sometimes only appreciated later in life and some not until well after their death. The reason is that music, the same as everything else, progresses, and what is tuneful to one generation may well be considered discordant by the next and indeed vice versa.

Classical, Romantic, jazz, rock, pop, and heavy metal composers and musicians of many genres, for instance, have been heavily sneered at by the general public over the years for their visionary views, their creative genius, their ‘different’ music, only to be rather liked 20 years later. Depending on your age your parents or grandparents probably hated the Beatles or the Rolling Stones in the 1960’s but will happily sing along nowadays.

It must be said that there is certainly discordant music around, but it depends upon the listener to put it into that category, and that in turn depends upon the listener’s previous exposure to the type of music being played. It is very often the case that the listener does not understand the music.

Many people listening to music from Asia or India may have difficulty in understanding the discordant notes; however the people living there would very possibly not understand western music unless they had heard it on TV.

The post Baroque period of classical and later Romantic music leading up to the present day has changed music so radically that discordant music can be heard every day by some people who do not have an interest or knowledge of a particular type of music.

Many ‘classical’ composers suffered from their music being thought of as discordant at the time. Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and many others found that their wonderful musical innovations did not always work at the time. It took time for the listening audiences to get used to the changes going on in classical music at the time. Many years later the music ceased to sound discordant, and the true beauty of many works was finally appreciated.

Of course some people go out of their way to play discordant music. There are even a music labels sponsoring so called “anarchy” music such as “punk rock” and many other genres. This ‘music’ is very loud and often played by young non-musicians deliberately (or not) off-key and not necessarily in time with each other. Deliberately discordant music can be, therefore, perhaps a statement of some sort of discontent with the writer, musicians and audience, destructive as opposed to creative.

There is little doubt that a person’s music education can make a big difference in many cases in deciding whether a piece of music is discordant or not. Some are exposed to music much of the time on the radio or TV. Others take more of an interest in other types of music, but most people just don’t like discordant music.

The guitar, be it electric or acoustic, is the most versatile of instruments. You can strum a few chords, adopt a highly disciplined classical guitar technique, or play sophisticated jazz chord and scale progressions. The choice is yours. Whatever your bag, the journey to achieving your goal and the fundamental sound is the real buzz.

It's a funny thing, but music is unlike most other activities. Take football for example, there is no escaping the fact that if you want to play pro-football you had better be good and there are no short cuts. Technique and fitness is an absolute must. Musical expression is different and shares may similarities with the spoken word. A few well chosen words can be far more effective than a tidal wave of sophisticated verbal statement. So it is with playing the guitar.

Arguably, the most successful singer songwriter who ever lived is Bob Dylan, whose delivery is based essentially on guitar sounds combined with an awesome skill as a lyricist. His musical structure is generally simple - but the simplicity of the music combined with great hook lines and lyrics is bang on the nail as a musical statement.

So the fact to take on board is that technical ability has little to do with musical talent. If your groove is a simple country, reggae or blues feel you can be damn good and highly relevant without being a technical genius. The simple player who plays with feel and taste is a musician, the same as a highly accomplished classical or jazz guitarist. It is amazing how formally trained musicians, i.e. classical, or other technical jazz players, are usually the most ineffective exponents of rock, country, pop or blues music.

Playing guitar is essentially an attitude, combined with feel and the necessary musical knowledge to express what you wish to play. Don't be fooled into following the path of so many potentially great musicians and be fazed by more accomplished players. When you tune in to the simplicity of a player such as the great blues guitarist B. B. King, you can't help but be affected by his economy of notes, played in such a meaningful, soulful musical context.

Playing guitar has an infinite number of possibilities. It is the most adaptable, useable instrument, and it's the journey to your goal that's the fun part. You will never stop learning guitar. Each time you pick it up you will discover something new and it needn't be hard to play to be relevant!

You may end up trying to keep up with the beat of the music, or perhaps slowing down. You want to find jogging music that you can keep pace with comfortably as you go about your daily run. You don’t want to over exert yourself, and you certainly don’t want to slow down so that you aren’t getting much out of your run.

When you are contemplating your jogging music, you also have to decide what type of player you want to use. If you have an MP3 player, you don’t have too much to worry about. Though I don’t have one, I don’t think you have to worry about them skipping and they are lightweight and easy to manage. If you don’t have one, and you want to take a CD player with you, you have to get one that is skip resistant and can stay in a pouch so you don’t have to worry about it as you run. Just remember that if you use a CD for jogging music, you are probably going to get bored with the same CD day in and day out, so make sure you switch it up.

Also think about safety when you are listening to jogging music. You have to watch out for traffic if you run in your neighborhood, and you don’t want to have your music so loud that you can’t hear anything else. If you listen to your jogging music too loudly, not only will you put yourself in danger with oncoming traffic, you might also damage your hearing. Keep the music at a comfortable level and enjoy your run.

How To Compose Music - Creative ideas

Starting a composition is a difficult task. Getting your inspirations, thinking creatively, applying your creative thoughts to your music and supplementing your ideas with additional composition are all difficult tasks to accomplish.

For starters, your current state of mind will greatly affect the music you write – whether you feel angry, joyful or sad chances are your musical composition will in some way reflect this mood.

Different times of day and different seasons affect your composing as well as current affairs and any stress’s you might have.

The variety of factors that can influence your composition periods are immense and hopefully these few pointers will demonstrate some methods of breaking out of the psychological restraints placed on you.

• Colours – If you are looking to compose a piece of music based around a certain mood find a relevant colour that matches for instance orange gives the impression of energy and drive. Eventually you will learn to bias your mood to suit the composition you are aiming for.
• Character – it is well known for actors to really get inside the character they are portraying through their acting. Understanding key emotions and various behaviours help the actors ‘ live ‘ as their proposed character. If you are creating a theme for a character (think darth vaders theme tune) you need to be demonstrating and describing that character through sound. If you follow the same process as an actor would you will eventually unravel hidden details that will help refine your composition, make it more realist and detailed and allow for it to be much more creative and expressive.
• Nature – a lot of creativity and inspiration can be got by observing nature. From birds communicating through a song like speech to the rustle of leaves in a summer breeze. Trying to emulate nature is an excellent way to begin a sound-scope – or incorporating nature into a character theme for example to express an angelic quality, singing like the birds (fast trills on piccolo or glissandos on the violin)
• Memories – another great source to tap into is your memories. A lot of emotion will go into compositions that are personal in some way to yourself. Spend a few minutes reflecting on your past – try to imagine the memory in great detail – sounds, smells, colours the weather – anything that will give you a good image and story to compose about.

These are just a few sources for inspiration – use your imagination – it has never ending possibilities!

With so many possibilities to compose about and now that your creativity is running, the next area to discuss is music theory.
The last thing that you want to happen is to have all these wonderfully creative ideas for your composition but being held back by the lack of musical knowledge.

A rugby player could develop his passing techniques and his scrum techniques but if he doesn’t know the rules of the game he won’t be able to perform during a game.

Although music composition and as a whole is not bound by any rules you still need the knowledge of writing music – in the same way as a poet needs a knowledge of his language to write a poem.

Some of the key areas you should know about and be constantly revising are:

• The Staff, Bar Lines, Clefs, Time Signatures.
• Note Values, Rests, Phrasing, Rhythm
• Articulation, Instrument Specific Techniques (pizz, con sord)
• Key Signatures, Circle of Fifths, Accidentals, Cadences
• Major, Minor, Diminished, Pentatonic, Diatonic Scales
• Modes
• Chords, Extensions, Inversions, Sequences, Arpeggios
• Instrument Ranges, Timbres of Each Instrument, Difficult Areas of an Instrument (The break on clarinet for instance or seventh position for trombones)

Of course it is not absolutely essential you know about all of this but it will mean that your creativity is weakened due to lack of a means to fully communicate.

Use music theory books – go through them and notate comments on the pages, take notes on to blank flash cards to memorize scales and extended chords, use past music theory exam papers to test and analyze your knowledge and then act on your weak areas, purchase a aural perception CD to recognize different cadences and the general sounds achieved from different combinations of notes and chords – there are many ways to learn all of this but find the way that you are comfortable with and stick to it.

Finally the last piece of advice in this article is to keep your composing active.

Aim to compose a short piece of music each day, maybe before you go to bed you can reflect on your day through a composition. Mix it up – compose for different orchestrations and different abilities.

Composing is challenging but by keeping active like this will greatly benefit you and your compositions – and you never know – you may accidentally stumble upon your masterpiece!

What is R&B Music?

The Meaning of the Name:
Rhythm & Blues is a term used to describe the blues-influenced form of music predominantly performed by African-Americans since the late 1930s. The term 'Rhythm and Blues' was first introduced in the late 1940s: it was created for use in musical marketing by Billboard magazine. In 1949, Billboard reporter Jerry Wexler (who later went on to become a music producer), created the phrase to designate the upbeat popular music performed by African American artists that combined jazz and blues.
The Reason for the Name:
The "Rhythm & Blues" term was created to replace the designation "race music," which until then was the stardard catch-all phrase used in reference to most music made by blacks at the time. After the "race music" term was deemed offensive, Billboard began using the Rhythm & Blues moniker Wexler created. The meaning behind the name? The "rhythm" part comes from the music's typical dependance upon four-beat measures or bars and employ a backbeat (beats two and four accented in each measure).
Evolution of the Phrase:
The "blues" portion of the name came from the lyrics and melodies of the songs, which were often sad, or 'blue' during the music's emergence in the World War II era. Over time the name was shortened to R&B as a matter of convenience. By the 1970s, rhythm and blues was also being used as a blanket term to describe soul and funk as well. And today, the term can be used to loosely define most sung African-American urban music, even though soul and funk can be placed in categories of thier own.

10 Ways to 'Make' This Your Best Music Year Ever

It doesn't have to be New Year's Day to make resolutions and set goals for your music career. Any time of the year offers a great opportunity for a fresh start. To make the most of the next 12 months, consider these 10 ways to "make" it a year to remember.

1. Make up your mind. A successful music career takes more than talent and tactics. It also requires knowing what you want combined with a positive mental attitude. Take time now to determine what you plan to accomplish over the coming year, and then vow to keep your expectations upbeat and your optimism riding high.

2. Make it easy. One of my favorite quotes is "Any fool can make something complicated. It takes a genius to make it simple." Don't overburden yourself with a complex plan. Pick a couple of key marketing areas and focus relentlessly on them. Keep things simple. Also, make it easy for other people: to figure out who you are and what you play ... to place an order ... to get in touch with you. There is beauty in clarity.

3. Make a list. To promote your music, you must connect with people ... and follow up with them repeatedly. Having a system helps. It doesn't matter if you use contact management software, a Palm Pilot, index cards or a 59 cent spiral notebook from Walgreen's. What's most important is that you have some way of recording names, addresses, phone numbers, etc., and a plan for connecting with the people on your lists.

4. Make an offer. It's one thing to have CDs and T-shirts for sale and live shows to promote; it's quite another to inspire people to buy and attend. Don't just list your merchandise and gig dates -- make offers: Buy one, get one free. Order within five days and get a 20% discount. Arrive by 9 pm and we'll buy your first drink. Get the picture? 5. Make love (not war). Stop giggling. It's not what you think (although that would certainly make the year a lot better). The message here: Stop fighting unnecessary battles. Don't always look for what's wrong with your career ... because you'll just get more of it. Zero in on what you want, keep things positive and operate from a position of warmth and passion.

6. Make lemonade. As a followup to the previous tip, when you do encounter a negative outcome, look for the hidden opportunity. Failure is a normal part of life. What separates the winners is their ability to overcame obstacles and learn from adversity. As the saying goes, when life hands you lemons, make lemonade.

7. Make up. Everyone has regrets, poor decisions they made and bridges that were apparently burned. If you still ponder these events, they can eat you up and turn you bitter. This year, consider taking steps to heal old wounds. Contact people you've had a falling out with or apologize to someone who really needs to hear that from you. Clear the air and make space for your success to bloom.

8. Make it or break it. While having a positive attitude is key, being objective and realistic is important too. Always view your marketing activities with a fresh eye. If something's not panning out, change it or try something new -- no matter how well you think the idea should be working. Your audience will tell you pretty quick if something is effective. It's your job to keep your eyes open for the clues -- and act accordingly.

9. Make great music. This should go without saying. No amount of money or great marketing ideas can effectively promote music that doesn't connect with anyone. What's considered "great" music is subjective -- but you should always strive to write, record and perform music that is highly satisfying to you and a growing number of fans. Resolve to do this regularly over the coming year!

10. Make haste. Don't make the mistake of waiting too long for the time to be right, for all your ducks to be in a row, for the situation to be perfect. That time may never come. Do it now! Another good quote: "Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly." Get off your butt, get busy, learn from mistakes and keep plowing forward.
